I got into contact with this wonderful music genre called Metal back in the ’80s, when my sister played tapes of METALLICA’s “Master Of Puppets” and “Metallica” albums. Soon came other tapes with SEPULTURA, SLAYER, CANDLEMASS, MANOWAR, etc.. Later the tapes were replaced by CDs. Then SAVATAGE became the center of attention, with DREAM THEATER, but METALLICA reigned. And when MTV played “Enter Sandman” (1991), I was totally hooked. ‘TALLICA became my favourite band and I actually didn’t look much further than that. but I also grew up listening to classical music from composers like Beethoven, Mozart, … And I think this also made a transfer to (Symphonic) Metal easier.

So after a couple of years, Death Metal also demands attention and BENEDICTION is one of the first of that genre whose album I bought. In school a classmate introduced me to Powermetal with LABYRINTH and STRATOVARIUS, whose albums (“Return To Heaven Denied” and “Destiny”) I then added to my collection. Powermetal now became the no. 1 genre to look out for. So, HAMMERFALL, BRAINSTORM, RHAPSODY, EDGUY… all of them had great releases around 1998 that you couldn’t ignore them. After that you start looking for similar bands, but after a while, you need some change. So you have a look at other genres like Death, Thrash, Heavy, Gothic with a.o. great and legendary bands like SAXON, DESTRUCTION, EXODUS, KREATOR, DEATH, NILE, IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST, … I had already heard songs of the ‘oldies’ back in the days, but I didn’t like it that much then. Going to festivals and concerts also helps discover new bands. 😉

Forums are one place to talk about music, having a website about it is another. Especially if you were/are keeping track of your favourite bands and want to know more. So I started Thoughts Of Metal. The name refers to the fact that I was spending a lot of time listening to this genre.
